Garrett County Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Facility, also known as the County Landfill, is located off Oakland Sang-Run Road, 3.5 miles north of Oakland and 2 miles south of Bray School Road. The facility is available for use by all county residents, businesses, municipalities and private haulers collecting waste generated within the county.

The county also maintains six refuse collection sites conveniently located throughout the county. These sites are available for use by homeowners to dispose of household waste, certain bulk items and recyclables. These sites are NOT available for trash disposal use by businesses, municipalities, or private haulers; however, Garrett County businesses and municipalities are encouraged to use the free recycling boxes at the landfill and the six satellite sites. For a detailed explanation of what items are or are not accepted at the refuse collection sites click here.

Persons who maintain a household in Garrett County may purchase an annual refuse site permit for disposal of household waste generated from their residence located in Garrett County. This permit may only be used to dispose of daily household waste (trash can waste) or other small loads of discarded items from their home (individual piece of furniture, a television, a mattress set, etc). The permit allows homeowners to use all collection sites as well as the landfill.

In general, waste other than household must be brought to the landfill and taken over a scale where a tipping fee of $35.00 or $40.00 per ton (in most cases) is collected. Non-refrigerant appliances (water heaters, stoves, washers, dryers, etc.) may be taken to most collection sites for a $5 fee per appliance or tipped at a fee of $35.00 per ton due at the landfill. Appliances that contain, or once contained, refrigerant gases (refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, etc.) must be taken to the landfill and disposed of at $10.00 per unit.

A separate fee is charged for tires brought to the landfill and is related to size of the tire and whether or not the rims have been removed. A summary of the rates is shown on this site under Landfill Rates – for additional information concerning rates contact the landfill office at 301-387-0322.

Please Note: Waste generated outside of Garrett County is NOT accepted at the County Landfill or any of the refuse collection sites.
